Completely built units (CBU) are coming to India in China. Import duties are applicable on it. When those duties are added, the high price has to be paid. If it were manufactured here, the Tesla would have been available at almost the same price in the US. If you look at the calculation, if the CIF (cost, insurance, freight) of the car is above $40,000, then a Tesla unit will have to pay 100% import duty. But if the price is below $40,000, the import duty will be 70%. If it is a long-range rear-wheel drive model, the price will be 68 lakhs. Musk has been criticizing the high duty in India for years.
