Thiruvananthapuram: The elections for president and vice president in six panchayats will be held today. It is expected that the voting will be held today as internal disputes within the fronts have been resolved in many places. In Alappuzha Veiyapuram, the UDF will not get the post of president despite having a majority as there is no Scheduled Caste woman member. The elections will be held today after the dispute within the fronts and the quorum was not met. The elections were postponed in Nedumudi and Veiyapuram panchayats in Alappuzha. The elections were postponed after CPM members opposed the party's presidential candidate in Nedumudi panchayat and boycotted the elections. Later, the CPM district leadership intervened and resolved the issue by persuading those who were standing in the way. In Veiyapuram, where Scheduled Caste women are reserved, the majority is with the UDF. However, the UDF candidate had lost in the ward. The election was postponed to today after the UDF abstained from the elections the previous day. UDF members will not participate in today's elections either. The person with the majority will be elected as the president by a vote of the participating members. With this, the post of president will go to the LDF, which has five members. The election was postponed after UDF members abstained from the presidential post in Kasaragod Pullur - Periya panchayat following a dispute over the post. The issue was later resolved. Usha N. Nair will contest as the official presidential candidate of the UDF. UDF and LDF have nine members each and NDA has one member. Dr. Sabitha is the LDF presidential candidate. In Ernakulam Vengola panchayat, which has 24 seats, LDF and Twenty Twenty abstained. UDF has nine, LDF has eight, 2020 has six seats and SDPI has one seat. UDF members abstained in Malappuram Thiruvalli panchayat. The UDF has 11 members and the LDF has 7 members in the 19-member governing body. The dispute arose because the Muslim League, which has four members, demanded the post of president for two and a half years. In the subsequent discussions, it was agreed to give the League the post of vice president and a standing committee chairman. The UDF is getting the government in Thiruvalli Panchayat, a stronghold of the CPM, after a long time.
