The landslide in Chooralmalai in Wayanad caused the collapse of Malappuram Kooriyad National Highway 66, the National Highway Authority officials told the High Court. The NHAI says that the pressure on the ground following the landslide caused the road to collapse. The Kooriyad National Highway 66 was built by filling in a paddy field. The Panampuzha, a tributary of the Chaliyar, passes nearby. The construction of the right side wall of the National Highway had begun in February 2024, even before the July 30, 2024, landslide in Wayanad. Construction of the left side wall also began in March 2024.
