Thiruvananthapuram: The government is moving to save money from the expenses of the global Ayyappa Sangam, which has become a headache for the government. The meeting to be held on the 17th of this month will be crucial. The Devaswom Board will ask institutions including Uralungal to reduce the amount. Efforts will also be made to collect the money due from sponsors. The board is facing a severe financial crisis. Uralungal alone has to pay more than Rs 4 crore. The move is to conclude the transactions within the time limit for submitting the report to the High Court. The audit report says that the board still has to pay more than Rs 4.35 crore for the tents erected during the Ayyappa Sangam and for booking hotel rooms for the guests. The names of the hotels and institutions are mentioned in the report prepared by the chartered account and submitted to the Special Commissioner. The Indian Institute of Infrastructure and Construction, an affiliated institution of Uralungal, which built the tent, has to pay Rs 4 crore. There is also more to be paid to the hotels. The amount is yet to be paid to hotels in Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi, Kumarakom and Munnar. Rs 4,35,13,259.93 is to be paid for infrastructure and hotels. The report also says that there are discrepancies in the figures for food distribution. The auditor was informed that 3000 people ate food at the gathering at night. The board's estimate is that Rs 4.5 lakh was paid for this. The estimate is that 5000 people ate food at noon and Rs 8.5 lakh was spent. However, the audit report says that there is a discrepancy between the figure of those who ate food and the amount paid by the board.
