In 1974, Kachathiv became a part of Sri Lanka. The name Kachhadweep or Kachathiv is derived from kacha which means dirty area. Kachathivu is an uninhabited island. Earlier this island was in the possession of King Ramanathapuram. Later it came under Madras Presidency. In 1956, the then Ceylon government came to the scene claiming the land. The Ceylon government argued that Kachathiv was part of the ancient map. In 1968, when India increased its maritime boundary to 20 km, the Kachathivu problem became active.
